Modi Government Nine Years In Power : Challenges Met or Yet?
On this May 26 2023 Modi-led government in India completed an eventful nine years in power. With a decisive victory in the 2014 general elections, the Modi government promised to bring about transformative changes in various sectors of the Indian economy and society. This article aims to assess the achievements, challenges, and overall impact of the Modi government's tenure over the past nine years.
One of the defining aspects of the Modi government's tenure has been its focus on economic reforms and development. Initiatives like "Make in India" "Digital India" & "GST" aimed at fostering manufacturing digitalization & tax reforms respectively. The government also implemented the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code to address issues of non-performing assets. These measures have had mixed results with some sectors witnessing significant growth while others faced challenges and criticism.
The Modi government has prioritized infrastructure development launching ambitious projects like "Bharatmala" for road connectivity "Sagarmala" for port-led development and "UDAN" for regional airport connectivity. The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana aimed at connecting rural areas with all-weather roads improving access and opportunities. The government also focused on expanding digital infrastructure and promoting broadband connectivity across the country.
Under the Modi government, there was a noticeable shift in India's foreign policy emphasizing a more proactive and assertive stance. The government launched the "Neighborhood First" policy to strengthen regional cooperation and launched initiatives like the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure. Modi also engaged in robust diplomatic efforts strengthening ties with major world powers and actively participating in multilateral forums. The Modi government launched several social welfare initiatives targeting marginalized sections of society. The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana aimed at financial inclusion, the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana provided access to clean cooking fuel, & the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan focused on sanitation and cleanliness. The Ayushman Bharat scheme is the world's largest health insurance program to provide affordable healthcare to millions of Indians. These initiatives have had a significant impact on improving the lives of many citizens.
Two major economic reforms demonetization in 2016 which was intended to tackle black money, and combat cross-border terrorism along with pushing the nation towards digitalization of currency, and the implementation of the GST in 2017 were highly controversial and polarizing. Demonetization aimed to curb black money corruption & counterfeiting black money but its short-term impact on the economy & the informal sector was widely shaken although Digital transactions increased by 50-55% since demonetization. The GST aimed at simplifying the tax structure but faced initial challenges and criticisms due to its complex implementation. After the implementation of the GST India turned into one market with a uniform tax on supplies of goods and services. In the last six years, the GST ensured compliance simplification with uniform processes across the country. This turned out to be Modi Government's major achievement.
The Modi government has also faced criticism on various fronts. Critics argue that economic growth has not been inclusive with job creation lagging behind expectations. There have been concerns about the shrinking space for dissent, curbs on freedom of expression, and challenges to democratic institutions. The handling of certain socio-political issues such as cow vigilantism & mob violence has also attracted criticism. Many a time Modi Government was on the back foot on these issues which Western media highly highlighted and propagated.
The nine-year tenure of the Modi government has been marked by several notable achievements and challenges. While the government's emphasis on economic reforms, infrastructure development, and social welfare initiatives has brought about positive changes, it has also faced criticisms and controversies. As India looks ahead, it is essential to continue assessing the impact of policies and addressing the challenges faced by the nation, striving for an inclusive and prosperous future.
As it is said that A politician thinks of the next election, Modi the statesman thinks of the next generation & that's what "Statesman" is all about. With Prime Minister Modi at the helm, a major chunk of the population firmly believes in Modi, and at the moment there seems to be no threat to Modi's gov't who'll once again be facing the voters with their "Progress Card" in the upcoming Parliament elections in 2024. Yet Modi and his allies can't comply only "Progress" & "International Recognition" aren't the only parameters that contribute to winning elections & Modi and his allies know this very well.
