PM Awas Yojana: Dream fulfilling of owning a home to Indians!

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), launched by the Modi-led Indian government in 2015, was a flagship program aimed at providing affordable housing to all eligible beneficiaries. This highly ambitious scheme not only aimed to address the issue of homelessness but also strives to improve the overall living conditions of the urban poor and rural populations across India. Here, we will look into the key features, achievements, and impact of the PM Awas Yojana. Also shedding light on the transformative power of affordable housing.

Beneficiaries: The scheme primarily targets economically weaker sections (EWS), low-income groups, and middle-income groups in both urban and rural areas. This ensures that people from various income brackets can avail the benefits of the scheme.

Credit-Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS): PMAY provides financial assistance in the form of interest subsidies on home loans to eligible beneficiaries. The interest subsidy ranges from 3%-6.5%, depending on the beneficiary category and income level making home ownership more affordable.

Construction and Renovation: The program aims to promote the construction of new houses as well as the enhancement and renovation of existing houses. This encourages individuals to upgrade their living conditions and ensures that the housing stock is expanded to accommodate the growing population.

Inclusion of Women and Economically Weaker Sections (EWS): PMAY recognizes the importance of women's empowerment and inclusivity. The scheme mandates that the property title be registered either in the name of the female head of the household or jointly between spouses. Additionally, priority is given to economically weaker sections which ensures equitable distribution of housing benefits.

Achievements of PM Awas Yojana: It's a massive success of the Modi Led Gov't that under the PMAY-U, a mammoth total of approximately 1.7 Crores of houses were sanctioned till March 2022. Further, the scheme has been extended till December 31, 2024, for the completion of houses sanctioned up to March 31, 2022. However, during this period no additional houses will be sanctioned under the scheme.

The PMAY also rehabilitated slums with the help of private developers & promoted affordable housing for the weaker sections through the Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme. The PMAY constructed affordable houses in partnership with the public and private sectors.

Urban-Rural Balance: The scheme has a balanced approach, addressing the housing needs of both urban and rural areas. Around 72% of the sanctioned houses are in rural regions, highlighting the government's efforts to bridge the urban-rural divide and uplift marginalized communities.

Technology Adoption: PMAY has leveraged technology to streamline processes and ensure transparency. The scheme incorporates the use of geo-tagging, mobile applications, and online monitoring systems to track progress and address any issues promptly.

The difference made by PM Awas Yojana:

Socio-economic Upliftment: The provision of affordable housing has a direct impact on the socio-economic conditions of beneficiaries. It enhanced their quality of life, improves health and sanitation, provides stability, and fosters overall economic growth by infusing employment opportunities in the construction sector.

Reduction in Slums and Homelessness: PMAY aims to eliminate slums and provide pucca houses to all homeless individuals. By offering affordable housing options, the scheme has made significant progress in reducing the number of slums and ensuring that people have a roof over their heads.

Women Empowerment: The inclusion of women in the scheme's implementation has been instrumental in empowering them as homeowners. Owning a house in their name or jointly with their spouse strengthens their economic independence and social standing.

Outcome: The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana is a transformative initiative that has made a substantial impact in addressing the housing needs of millions of Indians. By providing affordable housing, the scheme has uplifted the lives of the economically weaker sections, reduced slum dwellings, empowered women, and contributed to socio-economic development. As the program continues to progress towards its goal of housing for all by 2022, it is evident that PMAY has the potential to bring about a positive and lasting impact on the lives of countless individuals and communities throughout India.

Although the Gov't has done its best to meet the shelter need of its citizens yet many are left behind to avail the benefits of the scheme and so there is a need for the extension of the PMAY for at least a couple of more years.
